In the middle of 2020 with COVID quarantine in full effect with two kids under 4 years old living in their 800 sf house, Rebekah and Adam tore down a fence in their back yard and needed to remove the cedar pickets. The solution to both of these problems: a quarantine treehouse.
The treehouse became the centerpiece of their newly landscaped backyard. The design of the treehouse took cues from the vernacular forms of the Denver Sunnyside neighborhood while the section proportions were formed by the linear dimension of the 1x4 cedar pickets. While the top of the structure employs a simple form and regular structural rhythm, the base structure is less regular and responds to the specific site conditions, integrated into two trees. The treehouse’s connection with the trees is mainly through compression brackets and only two screws pierce the trees.
Beyond all of this, the project employs classic treehouse elements like a swing, folding access ladder and pulley to deliver squirt guns, candy, and other bribes. The Quarantine Treehouse was photographed by JC Buck and featured in the Modern in Denver Magazine.
