This project is a new indoor pool house and gathering space in central Kansas, containing a 16- by 40-foot lap pool. The clients requested a structure that was aesthetically similar to their existing neo-Mediterranean home and would allow them both interior and exterior space as they seek to entertain and enjoy lakeside views. This existing architectural language included a number of hip roof forms, so the new structure is a simplified, abstracted expression of the same; one single hipped roof, but with an off-centered ridge that emphasizes the main axis of the pool.
Our design resulted in separating the two structures and then linking them with a glassy connector and a new outdoor space – an internal courtyard for the home. This space will be a flexible gathering area in the summer and shoulder seasons and can be accessed directly from the pool house or via a new front entry. Much of the program is organized along an asymmetrical ‘bar’ in plan and terminate into a highly resolved poolside kitchen and lounge area. At this south end, floor-to-ceiling views toward the lake beyond create an expansive sense from within. This building is equipped with a highly efficient mechanical and humidification system, a full bath and built-in changing area, pool storage, kitchen and lounge.
